Please join us on Friday, July 18, for a gourmet 3-course lunch at what is arguably Vancouver's number one culinary destination, the award-winning Hawksworth Restaurant at the beautiful and historic Rosewood Hotel Georgia.

Many among us are all too familiar with the high profile debate that let up the Vancouver School Board's recent groundbreaking decision to adopt its new inclusive and progressive Sexual Orientation and Gender Identies Policy as part of its official Policy Manual. Following this important step forward, we are especially pleased to tell you about our two special guest speakers, Vancouver School Board Chairperson,Patti Bacchus, together with Out in Schools / Out on Screen Board Member and former VSB Anti-homophobia and Diversity ConsultantSteve Mulligan

About Patti Bacchus: Patti was first elected to the Vancouver School Board in 2008. She was a vocal and passionate spokesperson in favour of the VSB's controversial Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities Program during the lengthy consultations that preceded its recent implementation. Patti is a long time LGBTQ ally and equality advcoat both within the VSB and in the community at large. Working alongside her colleagues and community members, Patti was helped to adopt Vancouver's first Aboriginal-focused school of choice and an Early Mandarin Bilingual program in Vancouver schools. Patti was recently named as one of BC's Top 100 Influential Women by the Vancouver Sun. Born and raised in Vancouver, Patti is married, has a grown stepdaughter, and two school-aged kids.

About Steve Mulligan: Steve is an Inner City Project Teacher with the Vancouver School Board. In his former role as the VSB Anti-homophobia and Diversity Consultant, he has worked closely with Out in Schools to bring queer film and discussion into schools and he initiated the revision the School Board's LGBTQ policies to address the needs of gender variant and transgender students. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Out on Screen / Out in Schools and also works with several other local organizations to promote safe and inclusive schools across BC. Steve is married and has a daughter.

Patti and Steve will give us their firsthand insiders' account of the process that led up to the recent formal adoption of VSB's inclusive policy for LGBTQ students in Vancouver Schools. The will also address the fierce opposition they faced from a vocal minority within the the community during the public consultations that took place. Patti and Steve will also answer any questions that you may have about the process to took place, their experience, and about the new policy itself.

This event will once again be hosted by none other than our very own resident Friends & Company emcee, the ever-charming and always entertaining Robert Kaiser. For those who don't know, Robert is the talent behind Vancouver's best-known drag queen, the world class, Joan-ERobert is a long time and highly respected fixture in Vancouver's LGBTQ philanthropy and entertainment communities. He is a two-time recipient of medals from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, having been awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his work in community service and again in 2012 when he received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal.

/outinschools.jpgOn behalf of Out in Schools, we would like to thank you for your support. Thank you to everyone who attended any of our sold out events to date! Together, we raised tens of thousands of dollars for Out in Schools, money that directly enables Out in Schools facilitators to reach students all over BC. On top of this, our corporate sponsors and community partners have given many tens of thousands more to Out in Schools at Friends & Company events throughout the year. All of this is undeniable proof that together, we can make a difference for young LGBTQ people in our communities. Thank you.

On a serious note: Friends & Company, Out in Schools and our sponsors remind you to please drink responsibly and plan a safe ride home. Please don't drink and drive. Thank you.
